Compensation to be Paid to Families of Ship Collision Victims

The government of Changshou District in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, has raised one million yuan (120,000 million US dollars) to compensate the families of victims of the Dec. 18 ship collision.

The government of Changshou District in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, has raised one million yuan (120,000 million US dollars) to compensate the families of victims of the Dec. 18 ship collision.

The district will pay the compensation and then require that those responsible for the accident reimburse the funds, said KuangYi, head of the district commission in charge of post-collision arrangements.

On Wednesday morning, a cargo ship and a passenger ship collided in the Yangtze River near a port in Changshou in Chongqing.

The passenger ship sank within two minutes of impact, plunging all 38 passengers, including an infant and 9 crew members, into the icy water. Thus far, seven people have been rescued and eight bodies have been recovered, but 32 remain missing, official sources said.

A joint investigation team is investigating the cause of the collision.
