Gong Takes Women's Singles Title
Top seed Gong Ruina of China upset teammate Zhang Ning to clinch the women's singles title in the China Open badminton championships Sunday in Guangzhou.

It was also Gong's first China Open title. Gong was runner-up of the event in 1999 and 2001, twice behind fellow Chinese Zhou Mi, who skipped this year's tournament due to injury.

Gong broke a 3-3 tie in the first game to score six straight points for a 9-3 lead.

Zhang, winner of the 1996 China Open, managed to cut the deficit to 9-5 before Gong took it 11-5.

After they were tied at 3-3 and 5-5, Zhang, seeded second in the tournament, gained the upper hand with her vicious smashes andled 8-5.

But the 27-year-old veteran couldn't maintain the momentum only for Gong to collect six points in a row to win 11-8 and the title.
