A French television reporter who was hit by a tank during US military exercises in Kuwait died on Sunday, the French Embassy in Kuwait confirmed.

The reporter, identified as Patrick Bourrat, was sent to the Kuwait Army Forces Hospital after being hit by the tank on Saturday and initial tests showed his four ribs were broken.

However, the embassy spokesman Christian Huteau told the press that more tests revealed that "Bourrat's spleen was smashed and one of his kidneys was damaged."

US military sources said earlier that Bourrat, who works for France's TF1, was hit when he "leaned out into the path of incoming tanks to take a personal picture," and couldn't move back because of barbed wire.

Being a foreign correspondent for a long time, Bourrat had covered conflicts in Lebanon, the Gulf region, Chechnya and Kosovo.

Around 15,000 US troops are based in Kuwait, with many of them taking part in live-fire training drills as part of the long-running Operation Desert Spring training exercise.
