The Israeli government has decided to build new housing units in the Jewish settlement of Immanuel in the West Bank, and approved a plan to develop tourism project in the occupied territories, Israel Radio reported on Monday.

The Housing Ministry released a tender Monday for the building of 232 housing units in Immanuel, which is located between the WestBank cities of Nablus and Qalqiliya, to meet the ultra-orthodox settlement's need for rapidly growing of population.

Meanwhile, the Tourism Ministry decided to invest some 2.6 million US dollars on tourism projects over three years in the WestBank and Gaza Strip, including the improvement of Rachel's Tomb, a pilgrimage site to Jews in the West Bank city of Bethlehem.

The decisions were viewed by left-wingers as a dangerous move, which is showing that the Israeli government continues its settlement expansion policy in the occupied territories, amid the 27-month-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

The Israeli mainstream peace organization of "Peace Now" said inresponse that at a time when one-fourth of Israeli children live inpoverty, the government led by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon continued to channel money to the settlements.

The fact that some 150 Jewish settlements housing about 380,000 settlers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip has made Israel control more Palestinian land in the territories, and made the land-for-peace policy difficult to be carried out.
