More than 100 experts and strategists gathered Tuesday to discuss the current international situation in a strategic prospective.

At the annual meeting of the China Institute for International Strategic Studies (CIISS), Xiong Guangkai, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, delivered a report titled "To deepen understanding of the current international situation in light of the spirit of the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China".

Xiong, also president of the CIISS, elaborated the relationship between the strategic opportunities and concerns, anti-terrorism and anti-hegemonism, and economic globalization and diversification of development modes.

He said Jiang Zemin in his report to the Party congress made a dialectic analysis of the international situation and defined China's foreign policies.

Jiang's report is of guiding importance for the people to observe and research the international situation, Xiong added.

Among the experts and strategists attending the meeting were veteran diplomats and generals who have worked for years in the diplomatic and military fields.

Established in 1979, the CIISS has forged academic ties with more than 100 institutions of international studies in over 50 foreign countries.
