Turkish PM Denies Agreement with US on Iraq War

Turkish Prime Minister Abdullah Gul on Tuesday denied his country had reached agreement with the United States on a possible operation against Iraq, the the Anatolian News Agency reported.

Turkish Prime Minister Abdullah Gul on Tuesday denied his country had reached agreement with the United States on a possible operation against Iraq, the the Anatolian News Agency reported.

Gul made the denial when meeting with opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal.

Talking about Turkey's alternatives in case of a war in neighboring Iraq, Gul said the government had not yet taken a decision in hope of listening to the opposition party.

"We did not reach any agreement with the United States on any issues including site-survey of the military bases," he said.

Gul also denied reports saying he had instructed the Turkish Armed Forces to get ready for a war, dismissing such stories as "totally baseless."

"We attach great importance to informing the opposition party onthese developments," he stressed.

The United States had requested for the use of Turkish air basesand ports to launch the anticipated military strike against Iraq. Turkey is yet to say yes or no to its US ally in the coming days.
