SCO Agreement on Counter-terrorism Submitted for Ratification

An agreement to establish a regional counter-terrorism agency reached by the six member nations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was tabled with the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) for deliberation and ratification Tuesday in Beijing.

Minister of Public Security Jia Chunwang said at a meeting of the NPC Standing Committee that once the agreement is ratified, itwill help promote China's cooperation with other SCO members on fighting against terrorism, separatism and extremism.

The agreement will also improve the good-neighborly relations among the SCO members, better safeguard regional peace and security and help create a peaceful neighboring environment for China to carry out its modernization, Jia said.

He said the agreement had been discussed and approved by the State Council.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin, Russian President Vladimir Putin,Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov and Uzbek President Islam Karimov signed the agreement in Russia's St. Petersburg on June 7 this year.
