Quakes Shake Western Iranian Cities

A relatively strong earthquake, witha magnitude of 5.2 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale, jolted Iran's western city of Khoramabad in Lorestan Province on Tuesday, IRNA news agency reported.

The seismological base of the geophysics institute affiliated toTehran University recorded the tremor at 20:33 hours local time (1703 GMT).

Meanwhile, a 5.3-magnitude quake hit Sanandaj, the capital of Iran's western Kurdistan Province, at 20:30 hours local time (1700GMT) Tuesday.

There were no immediate reports of casualty or damage to property caused by the quakes.

Iran embraces a number of quake-prone zones. A tremor measuring 6.0 degrees on the open-ended Richard scale, with its epicenter located at Bouin Zahra in Qazvin Province, shook northern and western Iran on June 22.

At least 238 people lost lives and over 1,300 others were injured in the quake disaster. More than 25,000 people have been affected in total throughout eight provinces.

In 1990, a seven plus Richter-degree earthquake hit northern provinces of Zanjan and Gilan neighboring Mazandaran, in which tensof thousands of people lost their lives.
