The South Korean opposition Grand National Party (GNP) has filed a suit to the Supreme Court against the National Election Commission on Tuesday night, claiming vote counting in the Dec. 19 presidential election was suspicious, the GNP was quoted by the national news agency Yonhap News as reporting Wednesday.

"The GNP accepts the authority and the status of President-elect Roh Moo-hyun, who represented the Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) in the election," the GNP stressed, but adding that "they want to clear up nationwide suspicions of errors and irregularities."

According to election related laws, the NEC can recount votes if the suit is filed within 30 days after election day, and the NEC's leader will be the appellee if the suit proceeded. The recount could be held nationwide or in a limited number of regions.

The GNP deemed that the NEC had not prepared enough in the first introduction of the electronic counting system in the nationwide election, so they charged the NEC's chairman Yoo Ji-damso as to have the election invalidated, the Yonhap News reported.
