Jia Qinglin, a senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met in Beijing Wednesday with a delegation from the Association of Fujian Societies in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR).

Jia, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, praised the association for its "positive role" in maintaining Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, backing the SAR government's administration and promoting exchanges and cooperation between the SAR and the mainland.

He briefed the delegates on the 16th CPC National Congress, which was held in Beijing in November.

"The congress has reviewed the basic experience of the past 13 years, established the important thought of "Three Represents" as the CPC's guiding ideology and set up the goal of building a well-off society in an all-round way in China," said Jia.

"This is of great significance to the further advancement of China's socialist modernization drive and the cause of reform and opening-up."

Since Hong Kong returned to China more than five years ago, the central government had kept to the principle of "one country, two systems" and supported the SAR government headed by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa in governing by law, Jia said.

"Practice has proved that the concept of 'one country, two systems' is correct and has great vitality," he added.

He said he hoped that the Hong Kong compatriots, including those of Fujian origin, would work hard together and make greater contributions for a better future for Hong Kong.

The meeting was held in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing. The Hong Kong delegation was headed by Wong KongHon and K. W. Lee, honorary and executive chairmen of the association.

Founded in May 1997, the Hong Kong Association of Fujian Societies is an umbrella group of more than 130 local societies representing people with ancestral roots in Fujian, a coastal province in east China.
