Indonesian Senior Military Officer Sentenced to Jail

A senior military commander was sentenced to five years in prison for human rights violations during East Timor's break from Jakarta in 1999, according to localreports Friday in Yakarta.

A senior military commander was sentenced to five years in prison for human rights violations during East Timor's break from Jakarta in 1999, according to localreports Friday in Yakarta.

Lt. Col. Soejarwo, head of the military command in the East Timorese capital, Dili, was found guilty of failing to prevent pro-Jakarta militias from attacking the Dili Diocese and the house of Bishop Ximenes Belo on Sept. 5 and Sept. 6, 1999, the reports said,adding that during the attacks at least 15 people were killed.

The military commander is the first Indonesian security official to be convicted over the violence, it said.
