China's north-to-south water diversion project, with its first phase beginning construction Friday, will greatly benefit the industries of construction materials, machine building and environmental protection.

According to the overall plan of this gigantic water conservation project which will divert water from Yangtze River tothe thirsty northern areas in three routes, a total of 154.8 billion yuan (18.7 billion US dollars) will be invested for the first phase of construction.

Experts estimate that the 50-year project will need a total investment of over 500 billion yuan (60 billion US dollars), twiceas much as the ongoing Three Gorges project.

Due to a rigid request for the technologies, performances and manufacturing skills of construction equipment, it's quite difficult for China to entirely rely on its own resources and technologies to complete the project.

China needs to import overseas advanced technologies and seek cooperation with foreign companies in various ways, experts say.

The overall plan shows that the first phase of the water diversion project will consume altogether nearly eight million tons of cement. The concrete consumption per year will exceed one million tons, the annual output of a medium-sized cement factory.

The project will also need huge amounts of steel and timber, which will bring considerable profits to the construction industry.

An annual expense of 1.3 billion yuan (157 million US dollars) will be used in buying or upgrading machines. The project in the east route mainly needs big pumps with low lift, large discharge and high reliability, while the projects in the middle and west routes will call for special machines to deal with the tunnels andtough terrain on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

The water diversion project will also provide great market potential for enterprises engaged in environmental protection.

Some 369 sub-projects, involving a total input of 24 billion yuan (2.9 billion US dollars), will be carried out in the east route to ensure water quality and bring the water pollution under control.
