Nearly Quarter of Tibet's Population Involved in Sports: Survey

About a quarter of Tibet's population is now involved in sporting activities, according to the results of a latest survey on this southwestern Chinese autonomous region.

About a quarter of Tibet's population is now involved in sporting activities, according to the results of a latest survey on this southwestern Chinese autonomous region.

Considerable efforts had been made in recent years to promote mass sports in the region, a leading sports official said in a recent meeting in this autonomous regional capital city. This had created an excellent environment for local people to more actively devote themselves in sports, said Ji Jia, head of the region's sports bureau.

Up to now, 600,000 people, or 23 percent of the region's population, have been involved in some sort of sporting activities,he said.

Tibet is located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the world's highest plateau, at an average elevation of 4,000 meters above thesea level. As "the roof of the world", Tibet is known for cold weather and a lack of oxygen in the air, due to its unique geographical conditions.

The Tibetans however have created a wide range of sporting and recreation activities through generations of farming and industrial production.

The Tibetans have successfully combined the unique local activities with the modern forms and such activities as long-distance run, bridge-playing, chess, tug-of-war, basketball, football, crossbow-shooting and mountaineering. Theese are now among the most popular games in the region.

Residents of more than 30 cities and towns in Tibet have practiced sports regularly, which has drawn a large number of retired staffs and sports fans, according to statistics provided by the sports bureau. And sports activities are also popular in rural areas.

In recent years, athletes from the Tibet Autonomous Region havewon 22 gold, 18 silver and 13 bronze medals from such national sports events as the national games for the minority nationalities,national games for the physically handicapped, national cities games and national sports conference.
