Egypt FM Warns Against Israeli Schemes to Exploit Iraqi Crisis

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maheron Saturday warned against any Israeli scheme to take advantage of the Iraqi crisis to suppress the Palestinians.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maheron Saturday warned against any Israeli scheme to take advantage of the Iraqi crisis to suppress the Palestinians.

Israel might exploit such a situation by stepping up its aggressions on the Palestinian people, Maher was quoted as saying by the official MENA news agency.

He also reiterated Egypt's stance that it is important to seek apeaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis.

"This can be achieved by dealing with the crisis through the UN Security Council, refraining from any unilateral action and asking Iraq to pursue its cooperation with UN weapons inspectors," he said.

"The inspectors must carry out their mission neutrally and without any blackmailing, which would help avert a possible and nota confirmed strike against Iraq," he added.

Earlier in the day, a UN official announced in Baghdad that Iraqhas delivered to the United Nations a list of over 500 scientists who have participated in banned weapons programs.

Meanwhile, the United States has stepped up preparations for waron Iraq. US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has signed a 20-plus-page deployment order to send "significant" ground forces, combat aircraft and logistics support to the Gulf region.

The United States has accused Iraq of developing weapons of massdestruction to pose a threat to security of its neighbors and worldpeace. Iraq had vehemently denied the allegation.

More than 100 UN arms experts have been carrying out almost daily field inspections in Iraq since Nov. 27.

Egypt has called for a peaceful solution to the Iraqi issue, fearing that any war on Iraq would further destabilize the volatileregional situation.
