Yemeni Opposition Socialist Party Deputy Chief Shot Dead

The Yemeni opposition Socialist Party deputy chief was shot dead by a gunman Saturday in the capital city, local police said. The assailant has been arrested.

The Yemeni opposition Socialist Party deputy chief was shot dead by a gunman Saturday in the capital city, local police said. The assailant has been arrested.

Jarallah Omar, deputy secretary general of the Yemeni Socialist Party, died after taken to hospital.

The gunman, identified as Ali Jarallah, fired two shots at Omar when he was delivering a speech at the annual congress of the opposition Islamist al-Islah (reform) Party, according to the police.

Omar was hit in the chest and died of his wounds at a local hospital.

Security personnel nabbed the gunman, and surrounded the meetinghall for search and investigation.

Jarallah had been jailed for months on charge of anti-governmentspeech, security sources said.

The Socialist Party, the main opposition in Yemen, used to rule the southern part of Yemen before the Red Sea country united in 1990.
