Work started Sunday on a comprehensive information center in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province and a hub of China's telecom trunk network.

The project is estimated to cost 800 million yuan (96.39 million US dollars), and believed to be the largest of its kind incentral and western parts of the country.

Upon completion, the 120,000-sq m information center will integrate information exchange with software development and application as well as with computer mainframe custody and maintenance, according to Chu Junguo, general manager of Henan Telecom.

Henan took the lead among China's provinces in spreading use of telephones to every village and getting governments at all levels online. This year it opened the country's largest provincial-level broadband network. The information technology has become an important driving force to local economy.
