Kenyan President-elect Kibaki Says to Form Government of National Unity

Kenyan president-elect Mwai Kibaki said in Nairobi Sunday that he would form a government of national unity.

Kenyan president-elect Mwai Kibaki said in Nairobi Sunday that he would form a government of national unity.

Kibaki, who was declared by the Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) Sunday afternoon to be the third president of Kenya, said thenew government will be formed in the next few days.

The new government, which "has nothing to do with the government of the past," will be made up of all parties in the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC).

As for the major tasks facing the new government, the leader ofNARC said to eradicate corruption and resume Kenya's economy are the priorities.

Meanwhile, Kibaki also appealed to the people of Kenya to remain peace after the country's general elections held on Dec. 27,in which Kenyan voters cast their ballots to elect a new president,parliament and civic councils.

Five candidates are competing in the presidential race. The other three are Simeon Nyachae of the Forum for the Restoration ofDemocracy-People (FORD-People), James Orengo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and David Wareru Ng'ethe of the Chama Cha Umma (People's Party).

Incumbent President Daniel arap Moi, who has been in power for 24 years, is barred from running again by the constitution.

The poll, seen as the most open in Kenya's 39 years of independence, was the third since 1992 when the government allowedthe restoration of multi-party politics.

Some 40,000 international and domestic observers, including 140officials of the European Union, are deployed in the country to monitor the election process.

NARC is an alliance consisting of more than 14 opposition parties.

In the previous two presidential elections, KANU led by Moi wonboth because the opposition parties were divided on tribal lines.
