Kibaki Wins Kenya's Presidential Election

Mwai Kibaki, candidate of the opposition National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) of Kenya, won the presidential election held on Dec. 27 in the east African country,according to the latest result from the Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) on Sunday.

Mwai Kibaki, candidate of the opposition National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) of Kenya, won the presidential election held on Dec. 27 in the east African country,according to the latest result from the Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) on Sunday.

According to the commission, more than 10.45 million voters went for polling in the general elections to elect a new president,parliament and civic councils.

The entry into Kenyan politics of 71-year-old Kibaki can be traced to the early 1960s when he left his job as a lecturer at Makerere University to work for KANU, and participated in the struggle for independence.

In the 1963 general elections, he contested and won the Bahati seat of parliament in Nairobi and was, in the following year, appointed assistant minister for Economic Planning and Developmentin Jomo Kenyatta's government.

He was later moved to the Commerce and Industry Ministry beforelanding his first powerful job as minister of Finance and Planningin 1969.

After bagging this portfolio, Kibaki became a definite political heavyweight in Kenya. In 1978 when Moi became president of Kenya, he was appointed vice president.

In 1988, Kibaki was dropped as vice president and moved to the Health Ministry.

Kibaki finally ditched KANU in December 1991 to form his Democratic Party after the government introduced multi-party system.

In the 1992 presidential elections, he came third after KennethMatiba (FORD-Asili Party) and Moi, the winner. Five years later, he emerged second, becoming leader of the official opposition.

In October 2002, Kibaki was nominated as presidential candidateby NARC, which was made up of his Democratic Party and more than 10 other opposition parties and organizations.
