Newly installed President Mwai Kibaki will drive back to State House Monday together with Mr Daniel Toroitich arap Moi after a glittering swearing-in ceremony at Uhuru Park.

At State House Mr Moi will usher his successor into his office in a touchingly informal ceremony that will bring to an end 40 years of Kanu rule and set the seal on a new era of government by the National Rainbow Coalition.

The two men -- political friends and rivals for more than 40 years -- will then enjoy lunch together before Mr Moi is flown by helicopter to his farm at Kabarak, Nakuru.

And then Mr Kibaki will get down to work.

His main Government appointments and key Cabinet positions were all expected to be in place by the end of a week that will include a hectic round of meetings with key State officials, security and Armed Forces chiefs, diplomats, donors and bankers.

But first comes the formal handing over of power at Uhuru Park, in a ceremony scheduled to start at 9am Monday. A spokesman for President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda confirmed yesterday that he would be among those in attendance.

President Kibaki will receive a 21-gun salute; a military tradition to show he has become Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, as provided by Section 4 of the Constitution.

President Kibaki is also expected to inspect a guard of honour in a ceremonial military Land Rover, which has been specially modified to take his wheel chair.

Outgoing President Moi will then give his farewell speech before President Kibaki addresses the nation, and they leave together for State House.

Protocol experts had put the final touches to the ceremony by Sunday night.
