The South Korean National Police Agency Office confirmed on Saturday that Kim Woo-choong, 66, the former chairman of the bankrupt Daewoo Group who has been accused of fraud, still has French citizenship.

Kim Woo-choong was granted citizenship in April 1987 by the French government and has maintained it ever since. Kim Woo-choong's status was confirmed by a police liaison officer, Kim Sang-ho, who said the department's information came from the French Security Division.

The police so far have no background information on how Kim Woo-choong attained French citizenship.

Since fleeing Korea in October 1999, he has been in and out of nine countries and regions, including Hong-kong, the United States, Vietnam, and Algeria. His current whereabouts are unknown.
