First Export Processing Zone in NW China Built

Construction of the Xi'an Export-oriented Processing Zone, the first of its kind in northwest China,started recently at the Xi'an Economic and Technological Development Zone in Shaanxi Province.

Construction of the Xi'an Export-oriented Processing Zone, the first of its kind in northwest China,started recently at the Xi'an Economic and Technological Development Zone in Shaanxi Province.

This was one of eight state-listed export-oriented processing zones approved by the State Council last June.

Jia Zhibang, acting provincial governor, said establishment of the processing zone will facilitate development of the export-oriented economy in both Xi'an City and Shaanxi Province on the whole.

The zone covers 2.8 square kilometers. Key projects in the first phase include buildings for custom inspection and the processing management committee, warehouses and a site for product inspection. The zone is scheduled to open in July 2003.

Scores of Chinese and overseas enterprises have applied for processing durable household electric appliances, bio-products, magnesium metal and other products, said Wen Changsheng, director of the zone's managing committee.

Currently, China has 25 export-oriented processing zones, whichare exempt from tariffs in China and goods produced there are freeof value-added tax.
