A ceremony of drilling 500 water wells for Cambodia by the Chinese government was held Monday in Prey Chor county, Kampong Cham province, some 120 km east of the capital of Phnom Penh.

The well-drilling project was financed by the grant of 16 million RMB yuan (about 2 million US dollars) from China.

Cambodian Rural Development Minister Ly Thuch expressed his thanks to the Chinese government for its assistance, saying "these wells will bring health and happiness to tens of thousands of the Cambodian people."

"The lack of safe drinking water is the biggest obstacle to eradicate poverty and to improve people's health and life," Ly Thuch added.

Chinese ambassador Ning Fukui said he believes that the well-drilling project will further strengthen the friendly relations between the two countries, and the wells will greatly help Cambodian people to resolve the safe drinking water problems.

This is the third batch of wells drilled by the Chinese government, which is scheduled to complete in 26 months. China has already drilled 1000 wells for Cambodia since 1996 to 2001.

According to Ly Thuch, about half of the country's 13 million people have access to safe drinking water now.
