A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) stressed the importance of improving ethical and cultural progress at a national conference held in Beijing last Monday.

Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said a massive campaign on promoting ethical and cultural progress should be launched to create a better social environment for building a more affluent society, as put forward by the 16th National Congress of the CPC.

Outlining major tasks for the next year, Li said efforts will be made to implement programs on the ethics of Chinese citizens, cultivate the national spirit of Chinese people, enrich people's cultural lives, rectify unhealthy tendencies in all trades and create a political, legal, economic, living and ecological environment for the Chinese people.

Party committees at various levels should strengthen leadership on promoting ethical and cultural progress, he added.
