Many Americans said they were now more cautious about what they spend than they had been and believe that it's prudent to hold off on more tax cuts, a poll released by the Associated Press (AP) said Monday.

In the poll, 44 percent said they were now more cautious about what they spend than they had been. That's up from 30 percent who said they were cautious about spending in the spring of 2000, before the economic bubble in the United States began to deflate.

According to the AP report, 44 percent said they expect their family's financial situation to be better in the coming year. That's a more optimistic view of the future than a year ago, when a third felt that way.

The poll also showed that even most Republicans said it would be better to hold off on tax cuts to avoid deeper deficits.

The tax cut is a centerpiece of President George W. Bush's domestic policy agenda. The White House is preparing new tax cuts that could total 300 billion US dollars.

Two-thirds in the poll expressed their worry that war with Iraqwould increase chances of a terror attack in the United States.

The poll of 1,008 adults was taken from Dec. 13 to 17 and has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points, the AP report said.
