Kenyan New President Vows to Combat Corruption

Kenyan new president Mwai Kibaki said in Nairobi Monday that combating corruption and reviving the economy will be the top priorities of his government.

Kenyan new president Mwai Kibaki said in Nairobi Monday that combating corruption and reviving the economy will be the top priorities of his government.

Addressing a huge rally after being sworn in as the third president of Kenya, he pledged tough efforts to eliminate corruption to ensure it ceases to be a way of life in the east African country.

He called on all Kenyans to come out and join the government's efforts in this regard.

Kibaki said that the revival of the country's economy is key toimprove the lives of millions of people who are living in poverty,and put the country on a path of a bright future.

"I shall offer responsible, transparent and innovative leadership," he said, promising to improve employment, infrastructure, education, health service, and the situation of insecurity.

The president pledged to provide free and affordable primary education and basic health service to all Kenyans, which drew the heated applause from the rally.

"Kenya will play a leading role in regional, African and world affairs," Kibaki said, adding that the country will continue its efforts in resolving the conflicts in Somalia, Sudan and the GreatLake region.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Tanzanian President BenjaminMkapa, Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa and representatives from other African governments as well as foreign diplomats stationed in Nairobi attended the inauguration ceremony.

Kibaki, 71, and his National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) of Kenya won a landslide victory in Dec. 27 general elections.

The poll, seen as the most important and competitive in Kenya's39 years of independence, was the third since 1992 when the government allowed the restoration of multi-party politics.

Speaking at the ceremony, former Kenyan president Daniel arap Moi said that the elections had been conducted in a peaceful manner, which clearly indicated "Africa can manage its own destiny."
