The government will accept online applications for import and export licences from January 1 next year to streamline foreign trade.

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation (MOFTEC) said in a statement that online licence applications will further improve management of import and export licences in China, which is now a major international trader.

An import & export licence management system was put into place earlier this year, connecting the central and regional departments that issue licences.

The ministry statement said the online applications will not only improve government efficiency and transparency, but also help foreign trade companies cut their running costs.

The new network can also provide government and business with foreign trade statistics and track import and export trends.

A MOFTEC official said the improvements in issuing licences would help ensure sound foreign trade, although China has also promised to reduce commodity categories under the licence management system.

To ensure online applications proceed smoothly, the bureau under the MOFTEC in charge of licence and quota management has carried out trials in Beijing and Shanghai municipalities and Guangdong Province and trained the staff involved.

China's foreign trade, rising at an average annual rate of 13.8 per cent since 1997, is expected to hit US$620 billion this year.

Figures show that exports from January to November rose 21.6 per cent to US$293.69 billion and imports grew 20.5 per cent to US$266.49 billion.
