Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Mahersaid on Tuesday establishing an independent Palestinian state is key to the stability in the Middle East.

"Stability brings good to development and opens a door before a fair settlement in accordance with international resolutions and agreements," Maher was quoted as saying by the official MENA news agency.

He also condemned Israel's incessant aggressive policies againstPalestinians and its insistence to nip in the bud any serious efforts to achieve an aspired reconciliation.

The year 2003 would see more extremism on the Israeli side, Maher said, stressing that "this is a matter we must confront with a rational Arab conduct clinging to our principles."

Egypt, the first Arab country to have signed a peace treaty withIsrael in 1979, has been a key peace broker between the Palestinians and Israel.
