Chinese Athletes Win 110 World Champion Titles in 2002

Chinese athletes won a total of 110 world champion titles in the year 2000, the country's national sports authorities the State General Administration of Sports said in Beijing on Tuesday.

Chinese athletes won a total of 110 world champion titles in the year 2000, the country's national sports authorities the State General Administration of Sports said here on Tuesday.

The passing year is marked by China's historical breakthrough in winter Olympics with her first ever gold medal from the Salt Lake City Games and a sixth straight time for China to take the top spot in the Asian Games gold medal tally, in Busan, South Korea.

Chinese won the world titles in world championships and World Cup meets in 2002. Of the titles, 42 were won in Olympic events, which represented 38 percent of the total titles won.

Among the world titles are 18 in shooting, 17 in weightlifting,15 in speedskating, 13 in under-water swimming, 10 in diving, seven in marine modeling, six in Wushu, five in gymnastics, three in short-course swimming, two each in chess and air modeling, and one each in athletics, yachting, windsurfing, fencing, field hockey, badminton, table tennis, figure skating, acrobatic gymnastics and parachuting.

And from October of 1949 up to the end of 2002, Chinese athletes have won a total of 1,608 world titles, the Administration said.
