Chinese Athletes Set 29 World Records in 2002

Chinese athletes set a total of 29 world records in the year 2000, the country's national sports authorities the State General Administration of Sports said in Beijing on Tuesday.

Chinese athletes set a total of 29 world records in the year 2000, the country's national sports authorities the State General Administration of Sports said here on Tuesday.

The passing year saw China score a historic breakthrough in winter Olympics with a first ever gold medal from the Salt Lake City Games and Chinese athletes took the top place in Asian Games gold medal tally for a sixth straight time, in Busan, South Korea.

Among the outstanding achievements by Chinese in 2002 were the world records set by 17 athletes and five teams, including seven records in Olympic events.

Of these records, 17 were set in weightlifting, eight in shooting, two in short-course swimming, and one each in cycling and under-water swimming.

And from October of 1949 up to now, Chinese athletes have established or surpassed a total of 1,087 world records, accordingto the national sports authorities.
