Fireworks Blast Kills 17, Injures 50 in Mexico

At least 17 people were killed and about 50 others injured on Tuesday in fireworks explosion in Veracruz, a port city of Mexico, local television reported.

At least 17 people were killed and about 50 others injured on Tuesday in fireworks explosion in Veracruz, a port city of Mexico, local television reported.

More than 50 people were injured, mostly from smoke inhalation,a local official told the television.

Illegal fireworks stands in a street market ignited and caused a blaze there, which spread rapidly to a nearby enclosed market. The explosion occurred at 5 p.m. local time (2300 GMT).

Firefighters were still working to put out the fire four hours after the explosion. Local authorities said the fire has been brought under control, the television report said.

Cause of the fireworks explosion remains unknown.
