Natural gas to be carried through a 4,000-km pipeline from the west and gas from East China Sea will be used in east China's Zhejiang Province from the end of 2003 and 2004 respectively.

Sources with Zhejiang Provincial Development Planning Commission say that the energy consumption configuration with coaland oil as major energy will be changed with the introduction of natural gas.

At present, related governmental departments of the province are busy shaping pipeline grids to receive natural gas.

Three gas trunklines, including the Huzhou-Hangzhou pipeline, the Jiaxing-Hangzhou pipeline and the Hangzhou-Ningbo pipeline will be built during the 2001-2005 period.

The construction of the Huzhou-Hangzhou pipeline has been well underway and the other two will start construction in 2003.

In addition, the Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou pipeline with the aim of receiving natural gas from East China Sea will also be established.

Cities of Hangzhou, Huzhou, Jiaxing, Shaoxing, Ningbo, Wenzhou and Taizhou along the trunklines will build gas grids to receive natural gas.

Natural gas transmitted to the province will be mainly for daily civil use and power generation. A group of gas turbines willbe built. For instance, three sets of 350,000-kilowatt power generation facilities will be built in Banshan Power Plant in Hangzhou, and two in Xiaoshan Power Plant. Zhenhai Power Plant, currently using oil, will be upgraded to consume natural gas.

It is forecast that natural gas consumption, concretely 8 billion cubic meters, would likely account for 10 percent of the province's total primary energy consumption in 2010. The province will require 17 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2020.
