Local police succeeded in convincinga man in a downtown residential area to release his four hostages on Thursday morning, averting a possible bloody ending.

Augusto Orlain, a former mental patient, initially took his three children, six months, three and four years old, respectively,as hostage and later victimized a lady village head who attempted to pacify him, local police officer Superintendent Elmer Jamias told reporters.

Armed with a long-bladed kitchen knife, Orlain told the police that he wanted his former employer, the owner of an electronics shop, to reinstate him.

Orlain's family asked the police not to pursue charges against him and instead, readmit him at the mental ward of a local hospital. This is the first hostage drama reported so far this year in the so-called "kidnapping-prone" archipelago.
