Former Chinese international Gao Hongbo is likely to become the assistant of Dutch man Arie Hann, the newly-appointed head coach of the national football team, local reports said Thursday.

Gao, who also coached China's under-16 national side and first division outfit Guangzhou Songri, was reportedly called up Wednesday night by Yan Shiduo, vice president of the Chinese Football Association (CFA), for "a secret talk" about the job, theFootball News said.

This is the first time that the CFA has held face-to-face talkswith the candidate of the job after Hann took over as the nationalcoach.

It was believed the CFA has received a list of five coaches from its technical committee, who was asked earlier to look for Hann's assistant.

Gao, 37, led China to quarter-finals in the 1986 World Youth Championships, the country's best feat in football at any levels in history. He was voted China's Footballer of the Year in 1991.

The newspaper said that the other four coaches in the list are Jia Xiuquan, Li Hui, Wei Kexing and Guo Zuojin.

It was reported that Gao is most likely to get the job because he used to be one of China's top strikers and the Chinese nationalteam are desperate to sharpen their striking forces.

During the 11 international matches last year, their strikers scored only eight goals, with six from two matches with weak side Thailand and Syria.

The newspaper said that the CFA will talk to other four candidates before making the final decision later this month.
