A DVD and CD disc production base aiming to be the largest of its kind in China is taking shape in the Shantou Special Economic Zone, in southern Guangdong province.

The production base containing a high-tech park is being built by the Nanmei Electronic Corporation Limited with an input of nearly 450 million yuan (about 54.22 million US dollars) and three firms who, with the approval of the national Press and Publication Administration, are setting out to build 22 new production lines based on their original 10.

For every new production line, the daily output can be as many as 45,000 discs.

Once the high-tech park goes into operation, an annual output of 200 million, which may break down to 35 million DVD discs and 165 million CD-R discs, will be achieved.

The park will also have copying capacity which could reach 80 million CD serial pieces annually.

Currently, supporting facilities including water and electricity supplies are being installed and newly recruited employees are being trained.

Meanwhile, the local government has made it a top priority to crackdown on pirated discs and promises to penalize any enterprise or individual violating intellectual property rights according to the law.
