China planted trees over more than 100mn mu (15 mu=one hectare) of land in 2002, a year with the fastest speed, best quality, most effective measures, solidest job and richest fruits in terms of reforestation since the founding of New China.

China's afforestation work in 2002 presented five main characteristics. First, the pace was obviously quickened. A total of 112mn mu was afforested throughout the whole year, 1.6 times as much as the entire quota in 2001, which marked the first time in history that the actual annual afforestation area exceeded 100mn mu.

Second, the quality was markedly improved. With the State Forestry Administration energetically intensifying administration over afforestation quality, the afforestation work is now on track for regularization and institutionalization, as shown by an average 95-percent verification rate of the national afforestation as well as a 90-odd-percent quality rate.

Third, the percentage of ecological public forests showed a big increase. In 2002, a total of 61.98mn mu of farmland was returned to forest, among which 29.63mn mu was arable land and the rest was barren hill-land.

Fourth, the input increased several times. In 2002, the national investment in forestry reached 34.7bn yuan, up 90 percent or 16.7bn yuan over that in 2001.

Fifth and the last, the mass participation saw a flourish development. A total of 540mn persons-times took part in voluntary afforestation, with 2.3bn trees planted. The year 2002 also witnessed a burgeoning non-public forestry, coupled with a new situation wherein the whole nation was involved in afforestation.
