England midfielder Nicky Butt is preparing for a return to action for Manchester United next week following an ankle injury.
Butt has been sidelined since sustaining the injury during England's 2-2 draw with Macedonia in a Euro 2004 qualifier in Southampton on October 16.
"I'm pretty close now," said Butt at the club's TV. "With a bit of luck, I should be ready in a week."
But he would not rush back to action in case of any unwanted reaction.
"If I rush back, and it swells up, it could be another couple of months. So it would be a bit silly to rush back," said he.
Given that everything goes smoothly, Butt still has another barrier to clear before being started on the pitch.
He would face an intense competition in the club's midfield where Irish skipper Roy Keane are fit again and Argentine Juan Sebastian Veron is showing his best form since joining the club from Lazio in July 2001.
Butt may get his chance during United's next premier league match, away to West Brom wich Albion on January 11.
