The deputy head of a small coal mine, who is surnamed Tian, in Baiyin City in northwest China's Gansu Province was arrested Friday for concealing a gas explosion which occurred late last month.

The explosion occurred at about 9:00 p.m. on Dec. 22, 2002, killing 11 miners. Instead of organizing rescue efforts, the owner of the coal mine hid the truth after the explosion for fear of being punished. Soon after, he fled and is still on the loose.

Acting on reports by family members of the victims that the truth was covered up, the government of Baiyin City Thursday set up a special team to investigate.

However, the team members could not go down the pit due to dense gas and inadequate safety measures.
