Fifteen people were killed and 18 others injured after a bus plunged overnight into a valley in Iran's southern Hormuzgan Province, the state-run IRNA news agency reported on Sunday.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday night on a road linking the cities of Gavbandi and Bandar Lengeh. The majority of the victims were university students and professors.

The injured, some of whom in critical condition, were taken to local hospitals.

Police blamed the accident on the driver's recklessness and the slippery road due to melting snow.

Iran has one of the highest traffic accident rates in the world, with more than 20,000 people killed and 87,000 injured in an average 200,000 cases reported each year.
