Air travel between China and South Korea is growing at an explosive rate.

The S.Korean Ministry of Construction and Transportation announced Sunday that the number of passengers on China routes amounted to 3.97 million last year -- exceeding traffic to and from the United States by 1.4 million in the same period.

As recently as 1995, China-S.Korea passengers were only 30 percent as numerous as S.Korea-U.S. passengers.

In 2001, passengers on China air routes outstripped those on U.S. air routes for the first time.

Cargo shipments showed a similar growth, from 34,000 tons in 1995 to 172,000 tons last year.

Tracking the increasing demand, the number of flights between S.Korea and China rose from 6,377 in 1995 to 28,981 flights last year.
