The principal shaft of the Dongguashan cooper mine in east China, one of the largest in the country, is now complete at 1,120 meters underground, the deepest in Asia.

The mine, in Tongling city, China's leading copper base in Anhui province, has ore reserves of 95.45 million tons, with estimated metal reserves of one million tons.

Construction of the principal shaft, which started in October 1989, has cost 1.62 billion yuan (196 million US dollars) altogether, local official sources said. The mine is expected to be operating within the year, with a daily production capacity of 13,000 tons.
