United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has sent a special envoy to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to assess the humanitarian situation in the country, UN spokeswoman Hua Jiang said Monday.

The envoy, Maurice Strong, is expected to arrive in Pyongyang later in the week after a stop in Beijing, Hua Jiang said.

"His main purpose is to assess humanitarian aid but he would bewilling to listen to whatever DPRK officials bring up during his meetings there," she told a news briefing when asked whether Strong would discuss the crisis over DPRK's nuclear program.

A former Canadian businessman and a special adviser to the UN secretary-general, Strong has been involved in humanitarian operations in DPRK for some time, UN officials said.

Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency adopted a resolution Monday, giving the DPRK a last chance to comply with international demands for monitoring its nuclear program before referring the matter to the UN Security Council.
