"This holiday invariably brings peace, love, goodwill and hope into the homes of millions of people," Putin was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the Kremlin press service Monday.

"It strengthens the foundations of morality in our society, supports the striving of Russian citizens toward unity and concord," said the statement.

Putin praised the dominant Russian Orthodox Church and religious organizations of other Christian confessions that are traditional for Russia, saying their activities "bear great meaning in affirming high spiritual values."

The Russian Orthodox Church follows the old Gregorian calendar, which places Christmas on Jan. 7. About two-thirds of Russia's 144million inhabitants are Russian Orthodox.
