The United States will provide grant assistance equivalent to 5 million US dollars to the Royal Nepal Army (RNA), according to the US embassy in Kathmandu.

The United States has pledged the grant assistance in order to strengthen the RNA's Human Rights Cell and provide human rights training to the RNA personnel, independent English daily The Kathmandu Post on Tuesday quoted spokesperson Constance Colding Jones as saying.

"The US is providing this type of assistance worldwide," he noted, adding, "But this assistance is not for purchasing arms."

As per the latest decision of the US Congress, the sum has beenearmarked for 2003, he added.

Meanwhile, the first consignment of 3,000 US-made M-16 A2 rifles for the RNA has arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday. The army plans to procure a total of 55,000 M-16 rifles from the United States to replace its aging self loaded rifles to fight the anti-government guerrillas in the Himalayan kingdom.
