The first single marker on the Sino- Vietnamese border line was placed at a height of 472 m on the "Unnamed" mountain of Lang Son province on January 3.

The marker, called No 962 and located in Ban Di village, Quoc Khach commune of Trang Dinh district, was also the first of a total 316 markers to be fixed on a 253-km long border line of Lang Son in the next few years.

Earlier, double markers were installed along the common border line under the Vietnam-China Land Border Treaty signed on December 30, 1999.

The first double markers were planted at the Mong Cai (Vietnam) - Tonghsiang (China) international border gate on December 27 , 2001. It is estimated that 4,000-5,000 traders and tourists cross the border gate every day.

More than 1,500 border markers will be installed along the 1,350-km border line between Vietnam and China in three years from 2002, according to Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Cong Phung.
