Cross-strait ties will improve substantially if Taiwan authorities, taking into account of the interests of Taiwan compatriots and practical needs, are sincere about opening direct transport links and resume dialogue and consultations on the basis of the "1992 Consensus".

Chen Yunlin, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council and the Taiwan-related work office under the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks Tuesday in Beijing while meeting with a delegation of officials on mainland affairs from Taiwan's news media.

Chen said the Chinese mainland encouraged cross-strait exchanges between news media organizations and hoped that those organizations would set up permanent bodies on the other side so as to help increase exchanges and mutual understanding of the compatriots across the Taiwan Straits.

According to Chen, significant progress has been scored between news media organizations across the straits. More than 1,000 journalists from Taiwan have come to the mainland for news coverage and field reporting annually, and the number has been growing year by year.

The nine-member Taiwan delegation is currently on five-day visit on the Chinese mainland from Jan. 6 to 10 at the invitation of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council and the All-China Journalists' Association.
