Italian Holiday Death Toll Hits 232 from Christmas to Epiphany

A total of 232 people were killed in 199 fatal accidents on Italian roads during the holiday period from Christmas to the Feast of the Epiphany, Italian police reported in Rome on Tuesday.

A total of 232 people were killed in 199 fatal accidents on Italian roads during the holiday period from Christmas to the Feast of the Epiphany, Italian police reported in Rome on Tuesday.

Between December 20 and January 6, the police said, there were 9125 traffic accidents in which 7,089 people needed medical attention.

The Police added that they had handed out 104,722 tickets for traffic violations.

This year's holiday death toll showed an increase over last year when 215 people lost their lives in 188 fatal accidents and 6,635 people were injured in 8,970 accidents.

Speeding tickets handed out over the holidays totaled 16,066 while 15,676 fines were issued for failure to buckle seatbelts.
