Japan's Emperor Akihito to Have Prostate Cancer Surgery Jan.18

will undergo a prostate cancer operation Jan. 18, the Imperial Household Agency said Wednesday.
The 69-year-old emperor will be admitted to the University of Tokyo Hospital on the morning of Jan. 16 to prepare for the operation, which will be performed by a joint team of doctors belonging to the university and National Cancer Center, the agency said.
He is scheduled to remain hospitalized for about one month and will rest at the imperial residence afterward, it said.
During the emperor's absence, Crown Prince Naruhito will perform the emperor's constitutional functions.
The emperor, who was diagnosed with cancer in late December, offered his customary Jan. 2 New Year's greetings from the Imperial Palace balcony. He is scheduled to attend the annual New Year's poetry reading at the palace Jan. 15, according to the agency.
The agency added that it and the hospital will accept get-well cards but neither flowers nor get-well presents. People will be able to sign a visitors' book during the emperor's hospital stay.
