Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit France in early February, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said Wednesday.

He made the statement at a press conference in Moscow after talks with his French counterpart Dominique de Villepin, who made a stopover during his Asian tour.

"Russia and France pursue a global partnership policy, and upcoming high-level Russian-French talks will play a crucial role in these efforts," Ivanov said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Meshkov said the swift visit by Villepin to Russia was to prepare for Putin's official visit to France, which became chairman of theG8 on Jan. 1, 2003.
