NY City Streets Renamed in Honor of Heroes in Sept. 11 Terror Attack

Nearly 100 streets have been renamed in New York city in memory of firefighters, police officers and civilians who were killed in Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

Nearly 100 streets have been renamed in New York city in memory of firefighters, police officers and civilians who were killed in Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

According to a press released issued Wednesday by the city hall,mayor Michael Bloomberg has signed into law a bill to rename 97 streets and public places in the city after these people. Most of the streets are on Staten Island or in Queens.

Noting that firefighters, police officers and emergency servicepersonnel made heroic efforts to save lives, the mayor said all the people who lost their lives were heroes as well as victims, and renaming streets in their memory is a gesture that the city will never forget those who perished that day.

The mayor said he hoped the memorials would make the city better for those who were left behind.

A total of 580 people lost their lives in the line of duty at the site of the World Trade Center, including 343 firefighters, 37port authority officers and 23 police officers. The rest are civilian rescuers.
