World's Top Compressor Firm to Make Vehicle Compressors in China

The world's largest compressor maker -- the Matsushita-Wanbao (Guangzhou) Compressor Co. Ltd, a Sino-Japanese joint venture -- is to invest two million US dollarsto produce 150,000 vehicle compressors a year.

The world's largest compressor maker -- the Matsushita-Wanbao (Guangzhou) Compressor Co. Ltd, a Sino-Japanese joint venture -- is to invest two million US dollarsto produce 150,000 vehicle compressors a year.

Production would start in April, Aburaya Kiyoji, general manager of Matsushita-Wanbao, said Wednesday in Guangzhou, capitalof south China's Guangdong Province. Products would be mainly soldin China and would replace those previously imported from Japan.

The 30-year-old HFC-134a compressor model used in vehicles was power-efficient, small, light, quiet and low in vibrations, Aburaya said.

The Matsushita-Wanbao (Guangzhou) company, funded in 1993 by theJapanese multinational Matsushita Electric Co. Ltd and the Guangzhou Wanbao Electrical Appliance Co., specializes in the production of complete sets of air conditioners/compressors.

Its current capacity is six million units per year and it sold 4.3 million compressors in 2002.

Matsushita has been the world's top maker of compressors for the past 15 years, producing 100 million units all up, and its share of the world's market has exceeded 30 percent during that period.
